H Reviews - Not in Alphabetical Order David Housewright - Practice to Deceive This is apparently the second in this series, the first being a book titled Penance, in which we are introduced to Holland Taylor. I like his name and I like this guy. He has the typical background, ex-cop, etc. In this book his parents ask him to help an elderly woman who has lost all her savings. This story can get a bit convoluted with all the different characters and their own plottings and designs, but it does come together. The clues are there but sometimes I was so wrapped up in following one line that I let the clue elude me! Then it comes back to get you! I liked this book and will look for the first Holland Taylor story and hope there are more. This is a much recommended book! Joan Hess - Death By The Light Of The Moon This is the first Joan Hess book I've read and I will probably read others. I liked Claire, I thought she was funny and although I do not have a teen aged daughter, I could relate to Claire. The characters were well-drawn and very colorful. She and her daughter are called to her late husband's family estate in the South. It is a decrepit old mansion, probably a metaphor for the decay of the South, but I like to just enjoy a good story. This one is worth picking up and reading on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Jean Hager - Weigh Dead This is another series, and is the first one I have read. Tess is the main character and runs a B&B, The Iris House, in Missouri. She seems nice enough but I had a hard time believing she was really interested in mysteries. But the characters and the story are interesting and interestingly pulled together. A local fitness instructor is holding a two-week health getaway at the Iris House and the characters that attend are a motley crue indeed and murderous. I enjoyed this story but I didn't seem to have the enthusiasm I have for some of the others I have read, but I would still recommend it. The main thing that bothered me were the errors, not just typo, but in a couple of places the wrong character's name was used. I tried sending e-mail to the publisher and apply for a proofreading job, but the e-mail came back as undeliverable! Oh well! I haven't decided if I am going to pick up another of this series or not. © 1999, 2000 Speedcat.com Updated January 16, 2000 |
