G Reviews - Not in Alphabetical Order Elizabeth George - A Traitor To Memory This story has a myriad of twists and turns. The events are not necessarily in chronological order, and sometimes you are stumped simply because in your mind you are seeing everything lateral, when, in reality, they are not. There are several storylines here, and they are interesting, but not necessarily moving the main story along. The sub-storylines are really not resolved, in my mind anyway. You are left wondering. The main storyline revolves around Gideon, a violinist, and the memory that he has supressed since he was very young, about 8. We become intimate with the people around him who have molded him into the person he is, but who is he? This story delves into minds and hearts, and what people will do for their goal, their purpose in life. What secrets do families hide? Why? I would recommend this book, it works its way into you and you are drawn back to picking it up every night, even if you tell yourself, I don't think I want to know, it is painful to go on. But you must. Just as the characters do. You must go on. Bartholomew Gill - The Death of An Irish Politician This is one of a series of books about Chief Inspector Peter McGarr. I like McGarr. This book was first published in 1977 and so some of the IRA references may be a bit outdated because of recent political happenings in Ireland. But we still have a good story on our hands. The victim isn't completely dead. Yet he won't say anything about who tried to kill him. McGarr is a quirky Irishman and a good cop. I liked his wife helping him out. If you run across this in the bookstore, pick it up!
Annie Griffin - Date with the Perfect Dead Man I enjoyed these two 60-ish ladies a lot! They were funny and very likeable. It was a good story! I enjoyed the setting and the neighborhood characters. If you haven't read any of the Hanna and Kiki mysteries you will enjoy them. This is my first, and I will look for the others. Kiki is a real live-wire. Their little Marin County town is hosting a film festival and "Hollywood" people are coming to town! Judging from this novel, I guess Kiki falls in love a lot and really enjoys men! They seem to wind up dead a lot! I recommend this book. It is a great Saturday afternoon read! Elizabeth George - A Suitable Vengeance It takes several chapters to get to any murders! We are introduced to several characters on an individual basis and then later they are intertwined. The story is masterfully told. When we think we know the real reason behind what's going on, we really don't. Intertwined with the mystery of the deaths, is the mysteries of the character's lives, the good guys, as well as the bad. This is the first EG novel I have read, and evidently some of these characters are regulars in her books, and this novel gives us a picture of these characters earlier on. I am eager to read more. The background of this book is not only London, but Cornwall, and we are given an excellent picture of the Cornwall countryside and seaside storminess. This is a novel worth picking up. Anne George - Murder On A Girls' Night Out This was a fun one! I liked the main characters, Patricia Anne and Mary Alice. 60ish and each a character in her own right. Mary Alice is impulsive and full of surprises! She buys a local country western night spot and finds the previous owner dead! The twists and turns are exciting and the climax keeps you on the edge of your seat. I thoroughly enjoyed this one! © 1999, 2000 Speedcat.com Updated November 24, 2001 |
